The legal siting of poultry production units close to neighbors precipitated the need to develop siting and managemental guidelines acceptable to the public and the poultry industry. A committee was formed with representation from the public, the poultry industry, and county government staff. This committee was charged with developing siting and managemental guidelines for county government. Siting guidelines were developed with special emphasis on separation between new poultry sites and neighbors, with distinct distance based on wind direction. For biosecurity, separation was established between all species of poultry. Management guidelines gave the public recourse when existing facilities failed to mitigate nuisances. An accord agreeable to both sides was reached and became an ordinance.

Key Words: Poultry • nuisance • siting • urban encroachment • ordinance
