Strategies for Weighing Broilers, Broiler Breeder Pullets and Broiler Breeder Hens:2 Scale Type, Weighing Time and In-House Location

The effects of in-house sampling locations, type of scale, and time of weighing on apparent mean body weight, body weight gain and uniformity were determined for broiler and broiler breeder stock. Deviations in time of weighing were shown to be an important source of error when estimating live weight gain. No significant differences were detected in average body weight due to scale type. A significant location effect was found with breeder hens, but not with broilers or broiler breeder pullets. A balance between accuracy and efficiency of a weighing program can be maintained when average body weight and flock uniformity estimates are derived by sampling one in-house sampling location, using an electronic or a spring scale, and conducting weighings at the same time during each weigh period.
