Two experiments utilizing 480 7-day-old female turkey poults were conducted to determine the relative biological availability of phosphorus (P) in stabilized rice bran (SB; stabilized using extrusion) and raw rice bran (RB). Reagent grade (KH2PO4) was used as a standard source for determination of relative availability, In Experiment 1, P availability was determined while a constant Ca level (1.2%) was maintained. In Experiment 2, P availability was determined while a constant CA:P (total P) ratio (2:1) was maintained. In both experiments, each diet was fed to four replicate pens of six poults each. Poults were housed in battery brooders. Feed and tap water were provided ad libitum. With the availability of P from (KH2PO4) set at 100%, P availabilities from RB and SB in Experiment 1 were 13.7 and 12.1, 11.9 and 8.8, 6.7 and 7.6, and 11.9 and 9.7% for tibia ash (TBA), toe ash (TA), bone breaking strength (BBS), and body weight gain (BWG), respectively. Availability values for RB and SB in Experiment 2 were 14.3 and 10.7, 12.9 and 3.1, 3.6 and 3.6, and 6.1 and 7.7% for TBA, TA, BBS, and BWG respectively. Data indicated tat P from RB and SB was available equally to young turkey poults.
