Broiler chicks were reared under cyclic temperature conditions (26.8° to 36.7°C) and given supplemental potassium chloride (KCl) in the drinking water during a 21 day trial. Four treatments were evaluated: No KCl (control), KCl supplementation continuously; KCl during only the hot 12 hours of the ambient temperature cycle; and KCl during only the cool 12 hours of the ambient temperature cycle. No treatment differences for feed consumption were observed. Birds supplied continuously with KCl gained 7% more weight (P<. 05) than unsupplemented birds. There was a trend for increased gain in birds supplied with potassium during the hot 12 hour period, but not during the cool 12 hour period.
