A blue dye was administered to pullets via their drinking water as a means of identifying birds that had consumed a water-administered vaccine against Newcastle disease. Varying degrees of tongue staining due to the dye were observed. The degree of tongue staining was related directly to the amount of vaccine consumed. Vaccinated birds whose tongues did not stain were similar to unvaccinated controls in susceptibility to Newcastle. Birds with the greatest intensity of tongue staining exhibited the strongest resistance to Newcastle challenge after vaccination.
