The allocation of resources for maintenance, growth, reproduction, and health is a dynamic throughout the life of an animal. Resources are finite, and where allocations are directed is a function of an individual’s genetic background, stage in the life cycle, and environmental challenges. Included in this paper are discussions of the concept of resource allocation with examples from experiments.

Key Words: chicken • genetic selection • sheep red blood cell • body weight • antibody
