Research Reports

Barley Varieties, Enzyme Supplementation, and Broiler Performance

Abdulilah H. Mohammed

Correspondence: Abdulilah H. Mohammed

This study investigated the effect of adding the enzyme preparation ROXAZYME G to diets containing a high percentage (50%) of one of four local varieties of barley: Nomar, IPA-99, Aswad Two-row, Jezera Six-row. The results indicated that chicks fed diets containing ROXAZYME G were significantly (P<. 05) heavier than those fed diets containing no enzyme. Significant improvements also occurred with regard to feed conversion ratio, litter condition score, and mortality. The choice of barley variety alone had no significant effect on live weight or mortality, though it significantly influenced the feed conversion ratio. Significant interactions between the addition of enzymes and barley varieties were observed for live weight at 3 wk of age and feed conversion ratio at 3 and 7 wk of age.

Key Words: Barley • beta-glucan • broiler chick • enzyme supplements • viscosity
