The overabundance of spent hens necessitates finding alternative methods for their disposal. These experiments sought to determine the effect of time of feed withdrawal and killing before processing on defeathering of spent hens. Longer feed withdrawal times and waiting period between killing and processing yield carcasses that appear to have substantially more feathers; however, less than 5% of total feathers actually remain, regardless of feed withdrawal time and waiting period. The quantity of feathers remaining due to length of feed withdrawal time and waiting period between killing and processing seems too small to adversely influence the overall digestibility of the rendered product.

Key Words: Defeathering • feed withdrawal • killing time • spent hens
