Plant breeders genetically manipulate crops to increase crop value per unit of land. Maximizing crop value requires a good understanding of the total market system for agricultural products to consumers and can be achieved through attention to productivity (bushels/acre), reducing crop producer input costs, and enhancing grain value. Methods of enhancing grain value include increasing grain metabolizable energy (higher oil corn), reducing phytate in grain while improving available phosphorous for monogastrics, characteristics of grain, stacking value added traits, and better overall nutrient characterization of hybrids as appropriate for their intended use.
Key Words: Grain traits grain value high oil corn low phytate corn plant breeding yield
