White Leghorn cockerels helped measure the effect of number of cycles of alternate-day feeding (food restriction of 24 hr fast and 24 hr full-feed per cycle) on immune and antibacterial responses assessed after inoculation with E. coli or sheep red blood cell (SRBC) antigen. Chicks fed ad libitum had a more severe response to E. coli challenge than those on alternate-day feeding regimens. SRBC antibody titers were highest in chicks exposed to several cycles of alternate-day feeding and least for the 1-day fasted chicks.
