Formulating to meet minimum phosphorus requirements of the bird is not a simple matter. It is necessary to consider not only performance and environment but numerous interacting factors that can influence phosphorus metabolism and thus dietary requirement. Source of phosphorus, dietary calcium level, phytase enzyme, some vitamin D3 metabolites, and dietary electrolyte balance can influence an animal's phosphorus requirement.
In the past, liberal quantities of dietary phosphorus have been added to poultry diets since many interacting factors have only marginal effects on phosphorus utilization at higher levels. Today, however, with greater emphasis on precision formulation to enhance the economics of production and reduce potential environmental pollutants, the whole area of phosphorus nutrition needs to be re-evaluated.
Key Words: Calcium electrolyte balance phosphorus phytate sulphur
