The objective of this research was to determine whether manufacturer-supplied near-infrared (NIR) calibration curves could produce analyses as accurate as those obtained by AOAC standard analytical laboratory procedures. Seven soybean samples and 12 cultivars of whole soybeans were analyzed. Samples were processed using both Wiley and Cyclotec grinders before analyses, Samples were assayed for moisture, crude protein (N × 6.25) ether extract, and crude fiber. Coefficients of determination for NIRS predicted vs. determined values were generally higher when the Cyclotec mill was used. We used enough samples to determine that regression line slopes were significantly different from unity or intercepts significantly different from 0 for four of the eight relationships studied. These results indicate that the accuracy of NIR predictions could be significantly improved by running known standards and adjusting results for unknowns by observed deviations by standards.
