The objective of this symposium was to initiate direct interaction and collaboration between the scientists from the United States and European Union working in the areas of poultry meat and egg quality. The annual meeting of the Poultry Science Association held at Auburn University, AL, on August 1 to 3, 2005, provided the venue and opportunity for this interaction.

The European Federation of the World’s Poultry Science Association consists of 30 country branches with about 3,200 members. Working groups (WG) bring scientists from many of these branches to cooperate in fields such as the following: economics and marketing (WG1), nutrition (WG2), breeding and genetics (WG3), egg quality (WG4), meat quality (WG5), reproduction (WG6), hygiene and pathology (WG7), waterfowl (WG8), bird welfare (WG9), turkeys (WG10), education and information (WG11), physiology (WG12), and ratites (WG13). These working groups are also actively involved in organizing scientific meetings. Many European Symposia are organized in an alternating sequence with the World Poultry Congresses.

In the United States, the Department of Agriculture coordinates ongoing publicly funded agricultural, food and nutrition, and forestry research through various USDA agencies, the state agricultural experiment stations, and the state land-grant colleges and universities. A portion of the Hatch funds allocated to each agricultural experiment station is designated for regional or multistate research projects. The Multistate Project S292: The poultry food system: A farm to table model, was a 5-yr regional project completed in 2005 with participants from 12 states (AL, AR, FL, GA, IA, MI, NC, NY, SC, TX, VA, and WI).

In addition to this symposium, joint roundtable discussions were also held to discuss current projects and future research needs in the areas of poultry meat and egg quality. The next meeting of the groups was held in Verona, Italy, during the European Poultry Conference on September 10 to 13, 2006.
