True to the rich heritage of past editions, the 12th edition of Diseases of Poultry continues to be the standard comprehensive reference addressing diseases and abnormalities of poultry. It is the collective product of an exceptionally qualified editorial board and 96 contributing authors. Format is similar to the 11th edition but integrates needed changes that reflect logical organization and the acquisition of new information.

Specific chapters and disease entities are authored by one or more contributors widely acclaimed as exceptionally knowledgeable on the subject. The book is divided into six general sections: Viral Diseases; Bacterial Diseases; Fungal Disease; Parasitic Diseases; Noninfectious Diseases, and Other Diseases. Where applicable, chapters within these sections contain subchapters treating specific diseases or abnormalities. Two introductory chapters precede section I. Principles of Disease Prevention: Diagnosis and Control (chapter 1) discusses general poultry management, an overview of disease factors, optimal biosecurity practices, vaccination principles, necropsy and laboratory procedures, and practices involving antimicrobial therapy. The now stand-alone entity, Host Factors for Disease Resistance (chapter 2), is especially impressive. Its expanded content reflects the ever-advancing knowledge of immunology.

Overall, the figures, tables, and photographs are of improved quality and contribute tremendously to the usefulness of the book. The high-brightness paper produced through an acid-free process adds to the readability of text and sharpness of tables, figures, and photographs. The editors and authors have masterfully incorporated new information acquired since the publishing of the 11th edition while maintaining the book’s familiar format. The updated reference lists at the end of chapters and subchapters are extremely useful for further in-depth study of subject matter.

Diseases of Poultry, 12th edition is an indispensible reference for researchers, teachers, pathologists, clinical veterinarians, and all others desiring a comprehensive resource for the study and review of diseases of poultry.
